Learning and Achievement: AssessmentsProficiency by Student Characteristics
These bar graphs show how various groups of students with similar characteristics performed on the state assessments. Elementary and middle school reports show the NECAP 2006-07 test results in mathematics and reading. High school reports show the NSRE 2005-06 test results in English language arts and mathematics. Each bar represents all students in each group. The bars are placed along a horizontal line so that the percent that achieved proficiency lies above the line and the percent that did not lies below the line. The state goal is for all students to achieve proficiency in all core subject areas. We are years away from achieving that goal. These bar graphs show you what percentage of students from each group achieved proficiency in the most recent round of state assessments. They allow you compare achievements of varying groups of students. When some groups of students lag behind others, this is known as “equity gap.” If some of the bars fall significantly below others on the graphs, groups of students are making unequal progress. These equity gaps must be closed.
