WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

This table shows the number of students who have been temporarily dismissed from school or sent to an alternative placement, broken out by the reason for the suspension. There are a total of 40 types of infraction listed on the table.

The bottom line on this table shows the rate of suspensions per 100 enrolled students.

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

The state’s overall goal is to reduce “time lost from school” to 5%—that is, the average student would miss only one day of school out of every 20 school days. An out-of-school suspension counts as “time lost from school.” So the state’s goal is to reduce out-of-school suspensions as much as possible, while still ensuring that all public schools maintain safe and drug-free learning environments.
