WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

This table shows how students with disabilities performed on the regular state assessments.

The first column shows the total number of students eligible to take the state assessments; this column is based on the number of students eligible to take the New Standards Reference Exam mathematics assessment. It is broken down by school level: elementary school, middle school, and high school. The first row in each section (“Total students with or without disabilities”) is the total number of eligible students in the grade tested (4th, 8th, or 10th). The subsequent rows show the total number of students with disabilities in the relevant grade, broken into four categories: students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) with and without accommodations and students with 504 plans with and without accommodations.

The next four columns show, for each category of student, what percentage reached the standard (attained proficiency) in the mathematics and English language arts (ELA) sections of the New Standards Reference Exams and in the Rhode Island Writing and Rhode Island Health Education assessments.

The results are reported, and averages are computed, by school level—elementary school, middle school, and high school.

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

You would like to see that a high percentage of students in all categories reached proficiency in all the state assessments. In addition, you would like to see that students with disabilities had about the same proficiency level (percent proficient) as students in the state as a whole. If the proficiency level (percent proficient) for any category of student fall significantly below the statewide average for proficiency, then there is an “equity gap” for that category. These gaps must be closed.
