Participation of students with disabilities on regular state tests

Participation of students with disabilities on the
English Language Arts New Standards Reference Exam

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

The two pie charts on the left present information about the characteristics of the student population in Rhode Island. The first chart shows what percentage of Rhode Island students have disabilities; it also shows among the students with disabilities what percentage have Individual Education Programs and what percentage have 504 plans. The next chart shows demographic information about the state’s students with disabilities who have IEPs. These numbers are based on participation in the English language arts assessment.

The three charts to the right show, by school level, how many students with IEPs are identified as students with disabilities when they take the state assessments. All students participate in either the regular state assessments or the Alternate Assessment. But the state cannot link each of the students with disabilities with his or her examinations. Thus, these charts show that a certain percentage of students with disabilities took the examinations but when the results are disaggregated (as in the following table) they are not counted among the students with disabilities.
