WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT
This table shows the number of students who have been temporarily
dismissed
from school or sent to an alternative placement, broken out by the
reason for the
suspension. There are a total of 40 types of infraction listed on
the table. This is
the first year that RIDE has collected suspension information at
this level of
detail; in the past, only 12 categories of suspensions were
reported, and a great
many suspensions were categorized simply as “other.” WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
The state’s overall goal is to reduce “time lost from school” to
5 percent—that is, the average student would miss only one day of
school out of every 20 school days. An out-of-school suspension
counts as “time lost from school.” So the state’s goal is to reduce
out-of-school suspensions as much as possible, while still ensuring
that all public schools maintain safe and drug-free learning
environments.
